Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology and social media has significantly transformed consumption patterns among young people, particularly university students. Consumption behavior is no longer driven solely by rational needs but is increasingly influenced by social environment pressures, modern lifestyles, and intensive exposure to digital content. This phenomenon is evident among students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember (UNMUH Jember), especially the 2023 cohort, who are in a critical phase of identity formation and highly engaged in digital platforms. This study aims to examine the influence of social environment, lifestyle, and social media on students’ consumptive behavior at UNMUH Jember. A quantitative approach with a causal-associative research design was employed. Data were collected through structured questionnaires using a Likert scale and distributed to 100 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression with the assistance of SPSS software. The results indicate that social environment, lifestyle, and social media have a significant effect on students’ consumptive behavior, both partially and simultaneously. Among the three variables, social media exerts the strongest influence, followed by lifestyle and social environment. These findings suggest that students’ consumptive behavior is shaped by a complex interaction of social, psychological, and digital factors. This study is expected to contribute to the development of financial literacy programs, digital literacy education, and character-building initiatives to promote more rational and responsible consumption behavior among university students in the digital era.
